From Lisburn to Nashville: Daniel’s Move to America
Updated on: 7 July 2025

This week, Sales Engineer, Daniel Gillen, is relocating from Northern Ireland to work in our Kentucky office in the USA! We caught up with Daniel to find out more about this exciting new chapter.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your current role?
Sure! I’ve been working as an International Sales Engineer since July 2023, primarily supporting the U.S. market. In addition to managing sales and technical support for clients in the U.S., I also handle inquiries and prospecting across other regions globally. My role involves bridging technical understanding with commercial needs—working closely with both customers and internal teams to deliver effective solutions and drive international growth.
What has your journey with Smiley Monroe looked like so far?
My journey into this role has been quite a natural progression. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering, along with a second Master’s in Automation Engineering from The Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg in Germany. After university, I moved into sales roles where I gained valuable commercial experience, but I always wanted to find a position that merged both my technical background and my interest in customer-facing work. The Sales Engineer role at Smiley Monroe has been a perfect fit—allowing me to apply my engineering knowledge while also focusing on building strong relationships with clients across global markets.
How will being based in the USA help you better serve our customers?
What excites me most about working more closely with our North American clients and partners is the opportunity to build deeper, more collaborative relationships. There’s a real appetite for innovation and efficiency in that market and being closer to the action allows me to better understand their unique needs, respond faster, and add more value in real time. I’m also looking forward to being more hands-on—visiting customer sites, supporting trials, and identifying new opportunities that may not surface through remote communication.
What are you most excited about for joining the team in the US?
I’m really looking forward to joining the strong team already established in the U.S. I’m excited to work directly with customers, understand their needs firsthand, and help deliver solutions that truly make a difference. Being there in person will let me collaborate more effectively and contribute to building even better relationships.
What will you miss most about Northern Ireland?
Boojum!
What are you most looking forward to trying or doing in the US?
I’m looking forward to visiting different states and experiencing the cultural differences firsthand. The U.S. is so diverse, and I’m curious to see how life varies from place to place—whether it’s the pace, the food, or the way people connect. It’ll be interesting to get out and explore beyond where I’m based and really understand what makes each area unique.
Best of luck with your new chapter, Daniel!
